Tucker Entry Stairway

Tucker Entry Stairway

Inspired by the local stone - basalt, a volcanic stone, the home shows moments of red accents, that color the mood and evoke a feeling of warmth. The tucked away entry features a red glass wall, spanning all three floors, from the lower level, beyond a double high entry and stairway to the master level above. Here at the entry a sparkling chandelier by Catellani&Smith offers a first awe and reminds of the brilliance once sees on the slopes, when the floating crystals in the cold air of a clear winter morning, are hit by the sun and dance in the sky.

Tucker - Main Living

Tucker - Main Living

The 17 foot high ceilings of the living room open to the South and Summit View; framed by a massive concrete Fireplace elevation to one side and a Media wall enclosed in a Walnut Case to the other.

The Lighting Concept for the expansive, open and continuous space of the main living level, ensures the balance of daylight with electrical lighting, and the creation of welcoming destinations within. Achieved thru the integration of linear tracks, equipped with varied inserts for general and focused illumination beneath and complemented with low level lighting, emitted by plug-ins, ensure a warm and welcoming glow, close to the user.

Dim-out and Sheer Drape, manually operated juxtapose the minimal frame and mechanically operated sliding doors and add another layer of softness in balance to the sometimes grey and overcast skies or the other times glaringly bright alpine daylight.

Tennyson 205 - Staircase

The fully enclosed vertical staircase, connecting all floors is enclosed by board-form concrete and separated by plate steel.

Guided by light that is located along the architecturally defined edges and with it, benefiting from the spatial bounce that performs as the reflector, as well as the elegant brass handrail, one ascends from one level to the next.

Tennyson 205 - Penthouse

Tennyson 205 - Penthouse

The main living room and dining at the Penthouse level is generously day-lit from four sides - directly by two light-wells and a generous roof terrace, as well as the softer light channeling thru the staircase access.

The custom steel frame windows and doors are inspired by local and Mexican window walls and sit within the beautifully crafted and textured board-form concrete, which is structure and finish surface at once.

The architectural lighting throughout the levels features a systematic approach, with reveals holding curtain and light tracks balancing and controlling the light at most rooms.

Only in the living and dining as well as master bedroom, the wood floor is countered with a wood ceiling, which is equipped with flush recessed down lights to ensure well lit spaces in a warm and welcoming glow within.

Bayhouse Bayelevation

Thru the South East facing window-wall, with its expansive views to the bay and horizon daylight floods the generous living space with a golden hue.

To mitigate the reflection and self-reflection of a mirror image at night, flush recessed down lights were added at the exterior overhang.
The minimal ceiling recessed trim-less fixtures by EST - Energy Saving Technology, enable a cohesive and consistent appearance throughout the home; multiple accessories, lenses and trim-options as well as their linear integrated casework fixtures illuminate most of the home in highest light quality.

Bayhouse Livingroom

Bayhouse Livingroom

The cathedral like high ceiling at the living room, dining and kitchen, separated by the wood log fireplace and terminated by two copper lined belvederes, allows for daylight to flood the generous space in peach to pink colored hues of daylight.

To hold this generous space at evening and night time, and to ensure visual comfort at night, we opted to wash the extended interior hall and back-wall with light. Suspended stem wall-washers by Zumtobel Group allowed us to bridge the high ceiling drop, bring the light close to the wall and art and benefit from highest color rendering qualities.

The Lighting Design had to meet the architect’s aesthetic and atmospheric understanding and our client’s requirements; one of which was to keep the high cost of locally generated energy and thus operation cost as low as possible.

The use of LEDs throughout guarantees the lowest possible energy consumption and thus reduces energy cost.

A thoughtful minimal approach with maximum effect renders a welcoming atmosphere and warmth throughout the retreat that manages to evoke a homey feel by lighting the 'Life' within the Cabanon.

The major views toward north, east and west also allow for a variety of daylight conditions within - wash light on the exposed stone mass (exterior and interior alike, constantly changing light and color on the kinar metal siding, soft light via bounce off the exposed wood beam ceiling structure, Douglas fir wide wood plank floors and skim white drywall finishes, Anegre wood veneers and a variety of large scale stone slabs for bathrooms and wet areas.

At the lower level with drywall ceilings, trimless recessed directional spots ensure adjust-ability for art to be arranged on walls; wall-washers illuminate the gallery and linear LED casework lighting complement the schemes.

All lighting is dimmable and adjustable in light intensities to ensure comfort at all times.

Phoenix House

In 2008 Sebastian Mariscal and his team started the design of a new family home.

Phoenix House, located in Cardiff by the Sea would be a 3 story concept home for an Art collector and his family of five.

The new exposed concrete, three floor home celebrates a meandering path of transitional spaces; starting with the main level entry and a double high gallery it crosses the bridge on the second floor, connecting the stair with the living cooking and library areas, to finally arrive at the roof terrace with an expansive view toward the sea.

The early lighting proposals refrained from lighting the art to celebrate the concrete ceiling structure as pure and uninterrupted.

Throughout the process our client finally opted for a more conventional lighting scheme with most flexibility and adaptability with regard to changing needs.

The Architectural Lighting in most areas throughout, now is achieved via ceiling recessed directional low voltage down-lights, which ensure good orientation and safety when wandering throughout the house and for lighting the art.

Lone Mountain House

Lone Mountain House

The Architectural and Landscape lighting is reduced to the essential needs, simple but effective. Light is offered where needed. Two custom systems were designed and specifically made:

1, a directional task lighting track system with adjustable dimmable LED gimbal narrow floods lamps above the kitchen island and
2, six low voltage halogen dimmable custom pendants of darkened and golden hammered brass above the 18 seat dining table.

Lone Mountain Ranch House

Lone Mountain Ranch House

The Design of the Ranch House is inspired by Japanese tradition. The single form on the landscape appears with a silver reflective distorted hip roof enclosing a star gazing roof terrace and two low points for water harvesting.
The single floor building is clad in charred wood for wildfire mitigation and the interior ceilings reach high with large overhangs at the terraces and porches adjacent to the entry, living and rooms.

The interiors are light in color and with the use of high sloped drywall ceilings and white stained oak casework and floors.

Tucson Mountain Retreat

Tucson Mountain Retreat

In 2008 Cade Hayes Architect was commissioned their first home in the Tucson Mountains. The design is a single story stand alone mass on the desert landscape; built from rammed earth and interior finishes of painted smooth drywall, walnut veneer, onyx tile and smooth concrete slab floors.

The Architectural Lighting for the home had to be reduced and minimal in appearance yet of easy adjust-ability and ease of control; especially in regard to the overbearing glare of the daylight during daytime and the deep darkness at night.

Tucson Mountain Retreat

Tucson Mountain Retreat

The Exterior and Landscape Lighting is controlled via Photocells and timers. The home lighting is controllable via the sophisticated Crestron Light Control system.

The Architectural lighting is minimal in appearance. Drywall ceilings throughout the rooms and living room use trimless ceiling recessed down lights either arranged as single points or in array. A recessed track application running the adjustable fixture heads flush with the acoustic wood ceiling at the den and music (recording) studio allows for maximum flexibility for future adjustments. A linear LED down light complements the otherwise daylight/skylight opening above the kitchen island and counter.
The landscape lighting is low in light intensities and only offers accents along the arrival path and free-flowing firefly fixtures along the landscape step invite to ascent toward the entry.
