The remodel had to be a thoughtful intervention; one of walking the line between the removal of decades of layers of time, and one of the rehabilitation of the precious elements within.
The intent was to heighten and amplify the existing character precisely through the juxtaposition of technically-refined electrical lighting in balance with the organic feel of the historic adobe structure and its haptic raw-finished presence.
Dimmable LED task lighting at each of the seven work stations, ensure high performance at each desk. Two standing floor lamps emit indirect up light and celebrate the double height space, while minimizing interference with the ceiling fans that often are in use during summer-time.

NY Loft
In 2012 Rick Joy Architects developed in close collaboration with the client the concept and re-model interior of the NY-Loft, a 940sf single room plan on the 7th floor or the Schumacher Building in the heart of Chelsea, Manhattan, NYC.

The Concept follows the Life-style of living in layers: from sleeping, dining, living. The use of only a few materials was key to calm the single space.
White washed Douglas Fir wide Wood Plank Floor Boards continue vertically and become pivot doors, offering extensive storage. Highly reflective white Marmorino plaster stretches from the northern window wall, across the whole ceiling and amplifies the daylight to spill deep into the interior. Uber soft linens and floor to ceiling curtains create another warm and southing layer to create a welcoming place of rest and retreat from the busy NY City life.
The ceilings are kept clean and lighting is integrated with the Casework. Plug-in Lamps serve as character elements and ensure high quality of light for the tasks at hand.
